When taking on the responsibility of a new project, the most important decision you’ll make is whom you entrust the work to. When selecting a contractor there are several things to consider in order to ensure that you’ve made the correct choice.

– Speak with a member of your State Department of Commerce. A representative will be able to offer you details on the business, specifically the amount of time they have been in business.

- Contact your local chapter of the Better Business Bureau to find out the current rating for the contractor you are considering.

- Find out if the contractor has a website. Visit the website and look for testimonials from previous customers. With the ease of access to technology, most companies that are legit and professional will at least have a website.

- Schedule a meeting with the contractor so that you can sit down and discuss your needs and concerns. A good contractor should be willing to first listen to you to gain a better understanding of the work you plan to have performed.

- Ask the contractor for a list of previous jobs they have completed. Take the time to visit the sites and ensure that their craftsmanship is on par with the type of work you plan to have performed.
